HOW TO: Spring Makeup Trend #1: The Lined Eye

The BEST Beauty Trends Spring Fashion Week:

Are you ready for spring? I sure am. As soon as there’s that warm feel in the air, I’m changing. Everything. Clothes, hair, makeup. Well, first makeup. Why? It’s the easiest and the most fun I think.

So get your makeup out and let’s start to play. What to do? Here are my three favorite makeup trends worthy of doing this season….

Spring Makeup Trend #1
The black eyeliner.

Seen pretty much all over the spring colletctions, the dark lined eye is major for spring/summer this year. Usually this look is more reserved for the cooler months and a great holiday look, but the runway beauty powers that be decided to mix it up a bit and make it all about the eyes this coming season. The best part? The lined eye can be done literally any which way.

From elegant ladylike to a more smokey, smudged version.

The How To’s.
The Elegant Version

Want a more elegant version of a lined eye? Think strong, bold but in a ladylike way. The trick is in the pencil. And nope, keep away from the liquid liners. Why? Too hard to apply, too messy, hard to fix, hard to clean up, well, just step away….

Instead try my new favorite, a gel pencil. Glides on super dark and easy to apply.

Bourjois Automatic Eyeliner Pencil Noir 41
A twist-up eyeliner pencil, Liner Stylo draws a clean, precise line. The ultra-soft texture is enriched with bees and carnauba wax, which enables Liner Pricision to glide on effortlessly for a precise result, without dragging the delicate skin around the eye.

Trick to doing a dark eyeliner on top? Do all your skin work first, foundation, etc but skip the concealer and foundation under the eyes. At least for now. Do apply on the eyelids though. And then apply a soft matte cream color shadow over the whole eye. Keep the eye clean of any color. Then take your pencil and draw a very thin line across the top lashes from beginning to end. Keep it thin. Like? Now, from the outside corner of the eye, draw a little thicker above and go downwards till you get to the lashes in the middle of the eye. You’re trying to create a wing effect that’s slightly thicker on the outer corners. Trick: Always go from outside to inside. The other way around tends to get too thick and you always tend to go too far out, right? I thought so.

Now the coolest trick of all. You can leave the look like this if you want. Or if you want to go a little more dramatic, do a little flick of the pencil on the outer ends. Problem is, that usually, if you just draw on and continue from the line you just drew, sometimes the little flicked tips are different in size, length, balance. One eye always ends up higher than the other. Trick: Line up your pencil between your top and bottom lashes. There’s this little ‘ledge’, or skin part right between. Line up the pencil there and then just flick it out. Do the other eye. See? Both eyes are exactly the same.

Okay, if you’re dying to do the liquid liner, try instead a felt tip pencil. Much easier and you can do the exact same thing as above.

ck Calvin Klein Electric Edge Liquid Eyeliner Marker Pen 401 Electric Black
What it is:A long-wearing marker pen liquid eyeliner. What it is formulated to do:Electric Edge has a soft felt tip for creating smudge-proof, dramatic looks with easy application. The quick dry formula will wear all day long. What else you need to know:This eyeliner was designed to help you create any look: sweep on a thin delicate line for a well defined eye or go bold with a thicker line for a more dramatic look.

Ways to keep this look modern?
The trick to the new eye lined look? Do a touch on the bottom lashes as well, but just on the outer corners and smudge. You want a softer version underneath. This makes the eye a little more dramatic. Also, keep the cheeks soft, with a light pink blush, like Dior Diorshow Powder Catwalk Pink 003. And lips should be a lip stained color. Think the color of your lip with a sheen. No gloss, just a soft shine. You really want the whole focus to be on the eyeliner…….

The How To’s.
The new Smudged Eye

Okay, so you got the cat eye, liquid eyeliner look down. What if you want a more smudged eye? Try a waterproof eye pencil. Like

Dior Crayon Eyeliner – Waterproof Trinidad Black 094
Finally, a longwearing eyeliner that’s not afraid of water. Each classic shade glides on with precise, mistake-proof ease.

Forget a regular pencil. You want it to go on and stay on right? Take your waterproof pencil and line very lightly around the lashes, both top and bottom. The trick is to do a very thin line. Most people try to create the smudged eye by lining a lot of pencil and then smudging, usually resulting in a too thick and too heavy look. Don’t worry, you’re not done. Just draw on, thin. Now take that super handy smudger at the end of the pencil and lightly smudge around. Lightly. You’re wanting to keep the pencil line in the same spot, not blend it out. Not yet. Is it smudged? Okay, now here comes the fun part.

Take any color eye shadow. Ttrendy shades this season are:
copper
rust
bronze
burgundy

Keep the shadow on the soft frost side, if at all. No super duper shimmery, glittery shades here for this season. Remember a big trend is matte…. (I know, sorry….) so keep your eyes matte too. You know those mineral makeup eye shadows? Those are perfect. Soft, matte with a slight sheen.

A recent fav find: Urban Decay Loose Pigments

Even the handy dandy little brush is perfect…

Now with your shadow, apply over your pencil first with your regular, thin eyeliner brush. Then with a CLEAN Eyeliner Blender Brush, (very important here…) take your clean brush and NOW smudge… blend blend blend. Use a shadow brush that’s fluffy, short and soft. This is your blender tool and only your blender tool. Don’t use to apply, just keep clean and use to blend. You’ll thank me later, really.

Hourglass Shadow Brush No. 3
What it is:A medium sized eyeshadow brush. What it does: No. 3 All Over Eye Shadow Brush is perfect for applying and layering eyeshadow to the lid area. What else you need to know:Hourglass designed the makeup brush collection to be luxuriously soft, PETA-friendly Takelon brushes for a truly luxurious makeup experience.

Sephora Brand Professionnel All Over Shadow Brush – Large #21
What it is:This brush applies shadow to the entire lid, evenly. What it does:The wide shape and condensed, evenly distributed bristles make sure that your whole lid is uniformly covered in just a couple strokes. The thicker handle gives you more control as well. It’s a must-have for applying any base color effortlessly.

There you have it. A smudged eye that’s clean and looks good. Not heavy, dark, or too thick.

Keep this new smudged eye looking modern by keeping it paired with matte bronzer like Amazing Cosmetics Sun Shine Sun Bronzer Sun Bronzer applied as contour, and a soft shiny gold lip, like Benefit Cosmetics 24K Sexy Gold Lip Gloss Sexy Gold or Benefit Cosmetics 24K Sexy Gold Lipstick Sexy Gold Lipstick. Think of this look as the new bronzed golden girl look. For day. For spring and for summer…..
