Did anyone else read the Marie Claire article “Could You Pull Off Model Makeup?” in their March 2008 issue?

Reporter Ning Chao goes backstage and gets the same model makeup that the models are sporting in the runway collections, complete with every weird trend and style going on. Reporting on the beauty trends and how they translate to her, “I may be tall, but make no mistake, I am NOT a model.”

Interesting article, but I was surprised. About 90% of the beauty trends that she tried out, she didn’t like. Weird colors, too dark, too bright, too much, or too trendy.

“Now I see why Runway makeup is meant to last 15 minutes on a catwalk, no an hour schlepping around the muggy city. The mascara has now melted……”

“Great, so I”m wearing clown makeup.”

“The purple glitter looks stunning on the models but brings out my under eye bags.”

Don’t get me wrong. She liked some stuff. But most of it? Not.

Why?

Is runway makeup just not giving us everyday women any ideas on what looks good? Is pretty wearable looks just not around anymore? Has runway gone too trendy and creative for the average woman?

Women are looking to the celebrities for makeup ideas, which may or may not follow the trends (Oscar’s red carpet might bring out red lipstick if it happens to be in..) but celebrity makeup is just that, celebrity makeup.

Runway makeup used to be a showcase of how you could look, from the neck up.

Now, it looks like it’s gotten too out there for the average woman to get ideas from.

Or does it?
