Acne skin, and how to look good…

Makeup question:
“How do I make my acne skin look good without packing it on?”

Great question. Because with acne skin, you’ve got two issues to work with.
1. Your skin texture
2. Your skin color (as in discolorations.)
First of all, you want your skin care to come from your skin care, not your makeup. Yes, makeup might help, but it’s not meant to cure your skin. Makeup is meant to enhance, cover, give the illusion. So if you’re not happy with your skin care and what it is or isn’t doing, keep looking.
Rule of thumb: Your skin care routine should be making your skin feel perfect at every step of the process. Cleansing, toning, moisturizing. If your skin is feeling tight, greasy, slick, dry, etc. That product isn’t it. Keep your skin balanced and you’ll get a better result.
Now on to the makeup.
Issue 1: Your Skin Texture
Makeup always looks better on a smooth, soft surface.Think of painting on a canvas. A dirty, rough canvas makes the textures and colors of makeup that much harder to perfect. How to fake it? Baking soda. A russian model told me this trick and it works, without irritating your skin. Make a paste with water and apply like a scrub after you’ve cleansed your face. It dissolves all the dead skin and scabs from breakouts without irritating. Your skin will be velvet smooth after this. And you’re not pulling skin off like a harsh scrub does, which can actually create more scabs.
Now apply your moisturizer. Too much? Thin out your moisturizer with water… you need just enough to smooth out your skin so the rest of the makeup glides on. Primers? Mac’s Prep+Prime is perfect for oily skin.
Issue 2: Your Skin Color
Whether it be pink or red, well, that’s the color you want to get rid of.
How? Take a yellow loose powder.

Tarte Yellow Mellow
Any loose powder that has a touch of yellow in it is perfect. Dust over your just moisturized face. Yep. Under your foundation. The yellow is just enough to 1. calm down any red/pink and 2. keep shine and oil away.
Now, apply your foundation. A great water proof, stay put foundation. Lancome’s Color Ideal

and Revlon’s ColorStay Foundations

work great for oily/acne skin because they ’stick’ to the skin. And broken out skin has a hard time getting anything to ’stick’ to it.
Trick: Apply a bit more foundation than you think you need. Like maybe 2 layers instead of one. Why? You’ll see….

Don’t worry. You’re not done yet. Applied? Good. Now take a kleenex and fold into a square. Now press all over your face. What you’re doing is pressing the oils and waxes out of your foundation and leaving the pigment behind. Need a little more? Just apply a touch more foundation and press again.
What you’ll have is foundation now that covers, without the oils and waxes that will make it slide off in a few hours.
Now, apply concealer where needed. Best way? Avoid brushes (can move bacteria around, actually making you break out elsewhere on your face…) and apply concealer with clean fingers. Again, press with a kleenex after.
Now apply a light layer of loose (regular translucent) powder over to set.
A few tries with this technique and you’ll be able to calm and cover acne skin with the right amount of application and pressing with kleenex to get the right look.
Did it work?

If you did the baking soda paste every day on your skin would their be any side effects?

Not really because it’s pretty mild, but I would do 2/3 times a week. You never want to over due on acne skin because it causes the skin to act up. If your skin is feeling normal through your skincare routine, you’re fine. But if you’re feeling dry, tight, oily, raw, then you know you need to adjust something.

Thanks Elke! Do you have any good tips on keeping make-up on all day or keeping shine at bay?
