Keep those makeup brushes clean!

July 30th, 2008  |  Published in Makeup Tips & Tricks  |  4 Comments

Thanks to the ladies over at the fab ADesign Brushes, they gave me the dirt on, well, how to get the dirt out of those makeup brushes that you use every single day.

Shana King, a Pro Makeup Artist and Founder of adesign brushes, knows how to work a brush. Below she recommends a few easy tips to clean, maintain and store your favorite beauty tools.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR BRUSHES A CLEAN SWEEP

1. Storage: Store brushes in their custom pouches to assure they stay safe, so that the bristles will not be crushed.

2. Cleaning: Once a month use mild soap or shampoo and water. Gently work soap or shampoo through the bristles. Swirl the brush in circles in the palm of your hand and rinse under water, until water is clear.

3. Drying: If possible, brushes love to be hung up, bristles facing to the floor to assure all moisture is removed.

4. Quick Cleanings: As needed, use an alcohol-free swab to remove excess makeup in between big washes.

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap has to be the best soap to use for cleaning brushes. I’ve used clarifying shampoos, baby shampoo, and several different types of soap. This sucks everything out of your brushes in a jiffy and leaves them smelling fresh. The tea tree version is known for it’s antiseptic properties, and I love the way the almond makes my brushes smell. Every few washings, I condition with a spray on, leave in conditioner.

Saw a demonstration for a brush cleaner at a makeup artist trade show. I was so impressed I bought some. I will be buying this stuff again when I run out. Here is the best price I found for it

    great post!
it is important to be very careful how you store your brushes.
afterglow cosmetics has a an awesome organic lavender brush cleanser. i love it! it is gentle on the brushes but gets them nice and clean.
