So I got that chance to read Bobbi Brown‘s newest makeup book, Makeup Manual.  I was even lucky enough to get invited to the press premiere of the book itself.  Held in an art gallery in New York, I walked in to see incredibly large photographs of some of the pages of Bobbi’s book across the gallery walls. It was truly breathtaking. As I walked down the halls, each page showed the progression of the book and it’s chapters. Truly spectacular? The images. Whoever shot the photography for this book should win a medal.  Kevyn Aucoin raised the bar years ago with his iconic makeup books that showed editorially worthy beauty shots and truly showcased his photography makeup background in the best light possible. With gorgeous photography. Bobbi Brown’s book is no less.  Stunning.

But let’s move on. To the actual book itself.  I was lucky enough to bring my #1 Assistant (and makeup artist in crime as well) LIndsay with me, and we walked out clutching draft releases that were signed by Bobbi herself.  Let’s just say LIndsay was almost hyperventilating…

I thought it would be great to get two makeup artist’s opinion on this book. Me, as the veteran in the makeup biz (over 20 years) and Lindsay, a makeup artist for only a few years… (yet you’d never know it by her talent….:)
Here’s what Lindsay had to say:
“The makeup book I have always wanted as a new makeup artist has finally arrived!  Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual is an amazing tool for anyone wanting to perfect their makeup skills, and certainly for the emerging professional.  Brown explains the skills you need for beautiful makeup in a clear, concise way with step by step photos to further your understanding of how to create the best smokey eye, flawless skin, and detailed application.  Not only does she pull that off better than I have ever seen published, but the section about what it takes to be a professional is so valuable to anyone starting their career. Bobbi tells you everything you need to know, and as an artist myself for two years, I still learned new great new things that I can’t wait to try out.  Thanks to Bobbi Brown for creating a book I will refer to for a long time to come. ”

Me? Well, while the step by step how to photos are gorgeous, and you truly see the work in the photos, I found the book’s information to be mainly for those who have a beginning to early intermediate experience in applying makeup.  No jaw dropping makeup techniques or makeup tricks that you’ve never heard of.  Very tried and true techniques that we pretty much already know, but thankfully backed up with great how to photos that really show you what you might be missing. As a pro makeup artist, I would have liked to see more advanced techniques or tips that Bobbi may have come across in her years of doing photo shoots and runway, but I really didn’t get that here.  Basics are pretty much the staple.  Looking for fabulous new and different ways to do makeup? You probably won’t get it here in the book. Love looking at gorgeous beauty photography? You’ll sigh over the images. A new or beginning makeup artist looking to strike out in the world of beauty? Then this is a must have book for you.
