The New Smoky Eye

Even most makeup artists don’t know how to do this without getting the look all dark and muddy! The #1 most commonly asked makeup request  is “the smoky eye” look, and with this being a hot trend for this spring/summer and even fall, this is a must learn how to do right moment.
A lot of the time, to get the smoky eye, we used to do the 3 colored eye, as in a light/medium/dark version on the eye.  Well, now, trend wise? It’s in the wrong place and too, well, just too much.  Oh, and that darker in the crease look? It’s soo out.

The outdated smoky eye.

What’s in? It’s the darker around the lashes look.  Now, the focus instead of on the lid or the crease, it’s all about the lashes. Literally all, (and I do mean all) the runways were showing it. Like…….

Here’s how to create the new smoky eye for this year.

Step 1. Skin Colored Eye Shadow

Apply your skin colored light shade on the whole eye, from lash to eyebrow.  Apply this with a fluffy, flat eye shadow brush to be sure that it applies evenly.  Key is to make the light shade as close to your skin color as possible. Want to sex it up?  Make the light shade also a shimmer.. pretty for night.

Step 2: Dark Gray or Black Eye Shadow
Now with a short, flat shadow brush

take your black or gray shadow, and apply around lashes. Just around the lashes. That’s it. Make the shadow line somewhat thick on the top lashes, and regular on the bottom.

Step 3: Blend

Now with a small shadow smudger brush, (and make sure it’s clean, that’s the trick!) start blending your shadow around your eyes.. blend up a bit into the lid, but not too much. Keep next to the lashes. The more you smudge out, the wider it will get and the messier it will look. The key to the new smoky eye is to keep it as close to the lashes as possible.

Step 4: Mascara.

And a lot of it. Do it before your eye pencil. Why? Because if you hit yourself with the mascara, you can blend it into the eye pencil with a q-tip.
Step 5  Eyeliner.
Black or dark gray pencil here. Line all around the eye. Want extra sultry cat eyes? Do inside the eye as well, but this is optional.
The key in changing this look is that you have total control on how intense you want this look. The softer the color (a dark gray instead of a dark black) will soften the look, and by keeping the darkness around the lashes  closer to the lashes, you have a softer, less dramatic version. The darker the shadow and the more you blend it out,  makes the look intense.

See? The new smoky eye is a heck of a lot easier than it was a few years ago. And I’d say just as sexy.
