For only $8, leave it to Hard Candy to give you a super cute palette, of not just one, but 6 concealer shades. Available in 2 palettes, for Light or Medium skin, the price tag for what you get can’t be beat. But is it worth it? Does it work? (shown left: Light Palette)
For those not familiar with colored concealers, these palettes come in a shades that do more than just conceal.
Each palette has 3 skin colored shades on the right that range from a light to dark range in your skin tone. Great for mixing and creating your perfect shade on any given day. (shown left: Medium Palette)
The other shades are in green, yellow and pink. So what to do with those? It’s easy. The shades are designed based on the ‘opposite color theory’ and anyone who’s taken painting or art classes has a bit of a jump in how this works.
In painting, to make a color pop, you paint a ‘opposite’ color, or a color that is directly opposite it on the color wheel, next to each other to make them both stand out. For example; red and green are opposite colors. No joke as to why red and green are Christmas colors. Why? Because seen next to each other, they both appear more vibrant and more eye catching than if you were to see one color on it’s own.
So in makeup, how does this work? See blue opposite orange? Any makeup artist will tell you that orange (or peach, orangey brown, or any color with orange in it, etc) makes blue eyes look bluer. What works with opposite colors also? Opposite colors applied on top of another, makes it fade.
So you have:
yellow (hides pink)
green (hides red)
pink (hides gray)
orange (hides blue) (the light or medium skin color in your palette can be used for this)
So while the theory works, does this concealer palette do the job in concealing? The concealers themselves go on very light and thin, so there’s virtually no risk of creasing here. But I found that the colored concealers did a better job than the skin colored ones did. (Tip: the colored concealers are supposed to tint, not go on so much that you just create another color that you’d have to hide..) If you have a strong discoloration, like a dark brown skin pigmentation or such, this is not strong enough to do the job. Looking for a soft tint job to hide pink, gray, blue etc? This works great.
Try it the next time you’re concealing and you’ll be surprised how well it works.
