When beautypress stopped by this week at The Makeup Show NYC , the place was buzzing, even an hour before closing. With HD as “the new normal” make up artists are flocking to forums like this to learn about makeup application for the digital age, including the latest techniques in airbrushing.

AIR POD HIGHLIGHTERAir Pod Foundation from Temptu As Ava Scanlon, PR Director for Temptu and Temptu Pro explained, “with high definition, you see 10 times what the naked eye can see. It demands different makeup techniques.”

In addition to techniques—with well-attended seminars taught by make up artists including Tegan Taylor (Avatar), red carpet specialist Joanna Schlip , and Dani Sanz (artistic director of Make Up for Ever)—the show offered more than 70 product companies the opportunity connect with make up artists. Which products sold out during the show? What received raves? Here’s our informal round up of makeup artists’ favorites, a combination of classic products and new entries:

Jao’s multi-purpose Goe Oil , a combination of 28 plant and flower oils and butters, sold out at the show. Make up artists use it on legs to make them look sexy, according to owner Gayle Mayron . She noted that more and more makeup artists are looking for natural products for their tool boxes, and Jao products fit the bill.

Makeup artist Joanna Schlip uses her Red Carpet Kolour non-transferable body glow on Beyonce and other celebrity clients and is perfect for the red carpet. The product launched in March exclusively on QVC.

Nicole Darmanin, PR Manager of Mario Badescu , reported that the company sold out of its renowned Mario Badescu Drying Lotion and had strong interest in its Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater, which makeup artists use under moisturizer as a gentle toner alternative. Also, Oil-Free Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 (launched this month) was well-received by those seeking lightweight, oil-free hydration plus protection.

Perennial French favorite Embryolisse was on hand, selling lots of its Lait Crème Concentré , used by many make up artists and professional make up lines as their go-to moisturizer, primer and even as a make up remover. Makeup artist and esthetician Geri Giagnorio launched her first product, Geri G MIXER , a multi-purpose product that acts as a make up primer and can also be mixed with foundations, powders, mascara, and creams to create a range of effect. In addition to the mobbed booths of Make Up For Ever , MAC and Inglot , some of the indie color brands on hand, were selling out too:

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics showed several new colors in its Lip Tar line, including show sell-out Hoochie (vivid Magenta), Vapid (lavender) and Complex (a “dead nude,” according to director of creative development Katie Pellegrino). Explained Pellegrino, “We create the colors we’ve always looked for, in the textures we want. We create the colors for [fashion] shows, working closely with the designers, and then bring them to the market.”

Rocker-Model Theo Kogan’s two year old Armour Beauty showed new shades of its naturally based lip gloss lines, with shades named for pop icons and rock stars. Among the standouts for creating the ubiquitous nude look: Baby Jane, a light peach which looks “like milk,” on the lips and Edie (named for you know who), a light mocha shade.

At the show, Makeup artist Leslie Munsell and her Beauty for Real brand launched super black Miracle Mascara with a built in illumination, to complement her illuminated See the Light lip glosses . The Makeup Show NYC was held from May 16-17, 2010 at the Metropolitan Pavillion.
