Did you know that 60 million
Americans and 85% of teenagers have active acne, and that we spend over $2.2
billion a year trying to find acne treatments that actually work*?
Scott-Vincent Borba, celebrity
esthetician and author of Skintervention:
The Personalized Solution for Healthier, Younger and Flawless-Looking Skin,
suffered from severe cystic acne for years until he discovered that you really
are what you eat.
“Growing up I suffered from
chronic acne flare ups and breakouts until I realized that if I combined
certain “super foods” in my diet with highly effective skincare
topicals that have the same ingredients, I would finally start to see real
results that lasted. That’s why my Inside‐Out philosophy is dual
focused. It’s based on identifying specific food ingredients that have
unique skin care benefits, along with high levels of vitamins, minerals and
powerful antioxidants. Once I had that ‘ah-ha’ moment, my approach
to skin care changed forever,” remarks Scott-Vincent.
Based on his own personal
experience, Scott-Vincent shares with us his easy-to-implement solutions to keeping skin clear, smooth, and blemish-free
for life:
Shop your medicine cabinet: Look
for products that contain sulfur, lactic
acid, malic acid and mandelic acid. This combination of ingredients
effectively kills acne bacteria, refines and evens the complexion without
over-drying or irritating skin. Sulfur is ideal because in most cases it is more effective at clearing away acne, but less
harsh than salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, plus it absorbs quickly into the
skin and layers with perfectly with moisturizers and makeup.
Going holistic? Opt for
ingredients such as oatmeal or comfrey root
which naturally soothe and polyphenols
(found in pomegranate or chocolate), which serve as anti-inflammatory agents. Also
look for products with natural exfoliants such as olive seeds or jojoba beads
to gently lift away dead skin and reveal a smoother, softer complexion.
“Just be sure the exfoliants are round. Jagged ones can cause micro-tears
in the skin where bacteria can grow, making skin more prone to
breakouts,” advises Scott-Vincent.
Beauty Insider Tip: Whip up a
D.I.Y. acne‐fighting Clarifying
Chocolate Mask. Combine ¾ cup
lukewarm, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp chocolate syrup and 1 cup of instant oatmeal.
Apply the mixture to the face with a flat paintbrush or spoon and let dry for
15 minutes, then lightly scrub off with lukewarm water. The oatmeal
will soak up excess oils and exfoliate, while the honey will refine pores and
kill surface bacteria. The chocolate polyphenols will help with fine lines and
wrinkles and soothe the senses.
Snack away!: Combining topical skincare with
foods and drinks that contain the same effective ingredients allow for faster,
more significant results. To battle acne, Scott‐Vincent recommends
consuming isoflavonoids and polyphenols,
which can be found in red berries,
pomegranate and grape seeds. “These will help flush out all
the toxins in your body and help control oil on the skin,” Scott-Vincent
notes. “Also try to include anti‐inflammatory foods in your diet,
like goji berries (found at health food stores and upscale supermarkets) as
well as a balanced mix of vitamins A, B, C, D, E and Zinc (found in supplement
form and in many fruits and vegetables).”
Drink it up: Jump-start
the clarifying process by supplementing your water with nutrients that are
known to naturally detoxify the skin and help lock in moisture. “Look for
beverages that have vitamins and minerals between 100% and 500% of the
daily value (another option are add-in powder drink packets with the same
potency),” Scott-Vincent recommends. “I had trouble finding these
on the market so I created my Borba Clarifying Skin Balance
Crystallines”. Formulated with detoxifying pomegranate, essential B
vitamins and goji berry and cranberry, these powerful packettes pack
a serious beauty punch with zero calories! ($8.99 per 7-pack, Walgreens and
Walgreens.com)
Beauty Insider Tip: “If
you’re going to drink alcohol, which dries out the skin, adding
pomegranate juice, BORBA Skin Balance Water or Crystalline powder will help to
strengthen your immune system, remove toxins and improve skin clarity,”
says Scott-Vincent. Try the deliciously refreshing, skin-boosting Borbonade: Combine 1.5 ounces vodka, 4.5 ounces lemonade, .75 ounces
pomegranate juice (or .75 ounces of Borba Clarifying Skin Balance Water) and
pour into a tall glass filled with ice. Stir and garnish with a lemon wheel.
