“Madonna’s look demanded something fit for a Queen,” says her hair stylist,Wella Professionals Celebrity Ambassador Andy LeCompte. “We tried a couple variations in rehearsals with texture and size of waves. We played with the tightness and looseness of the curls, and also the amount of volume to see what would work best. We even discussed bangs!”

Andy provided the following step-by-step for us on how you can recreate this look at home:

“They’ve been doing this type of blowout in Greece and Germany for years, it’s a fast and easy way to achieve smooth bouncy volume quickly, so it’s great on set, as well as for salon clients,” explains Barbosa.

European Blowout

·       Apply a gel or lotion to towel dried hair to reduce frizz and add hold (try Rene Furterer Vegetal Styling Straightening Gel or Redken pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray)

·       Section hair  - the more sections, the more brushes needed. The average European Blowout uses around 12 brushes.

·       Brush each section up and over direct it with a Sam Villa Signature Series Round or Oval Brush. Wrap each section around the brush rolling away from the face, leaving the brush in (securing like a Velcro roller set).

·       Continue around head until each section is wrapped in a brush.

·       Blow dry until dry

·       Let cool

·       Take brushes out and style as usual

NOTE: If pressed for time, stretch-dry each section ¾ of the way and leave the brush in.  Continue around the head until each section is wrapped and complete the drying process with a Sam Vila E-T.C. Light Blow Dryer or under a head dryer. Let cool, take brushes out and style as usual.

Valentine’s Day Beauty

Bubble Bath

1 /4 cup liquid Castile Soap (you can find this at the drugstore)

2 drops Red food coloring

10 drops rose oil or your favorite essential oil

Rose petals.

To make:

Mix the castile soap, food coloring, and rose oil.  If this is a gift, pour it into a pretty bottle and attach a fresh rose.  If you are using it right away, add your mixture to running bath water and sprinkle your bath with rose petals.  Soak for as long as you like.

Strawberry Peppermint Foot Scrub

2 pureed strawberries

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and

2 tablespoons of granulated white sugar

4 drops peppermint essential oil

To Make:

Mix all the ingredients well and put into a pretty jar.

I like to use strawberries in this recipe because they are rich in salicylic acid which helps dead skin shed more easily. The sugar granules also help to exfoliate skin but are super gentle on delicate skin.  You can keep this in the fridge for up to a week.  To use your scrub, simply rub your feet gently in circular motions and rinse with warm water.

Exfoliating Lip Gloss

2 tablespoons Crisco solid vegetable shortening

1 teaspoon cherry or strawberry flavored powdered drink mix

lip balm container or clean contact lens container

To Make:

Heat the Crisco in the microwave for 30 seconds or until it looks like a liquid.  While it is still hot, mix in the powdered drink mix.  Then, pour the mixture into the lip balm container.  Let it cool for 10 minutes.

Luxurious Muscle Soak

1 cup Epsom salts

1/4 cup sea salt

5 drops pink food coloring

10 drops of your of your favorite aromatic essence (I like jasmine and peppermint for this soak)

To Make:

Mix the salts and then add the food coloring.  Using a fork, mix well so the food coloring is distributed evenly.  Add the aromatic essence and stir well.  Put it in a pretty jar to give as a gift or add it to your bath and soak.

1. Keep a bottle of Evian spray in your purse. They come in a mini size so they’re easy to lug around. A light blast of water can help with static or even hat head. Afraid of messing up your blowdry? Don’t worry. Do an all over light mist from about 12″ away, then smooth your flat palms over your hair.

2. Condition, condition, condition. You’ll want to go for a daily conditioner with extra moisture during our driest months. Plus, a once a week conditioning masque for five minutes will give you that extra dose of hydration your hair needs. Try Pureology’s Hydrate Conditioner and Hydrate HydraWhip Masque.

3. When it comes to styling, be sure to lock in moisture by using a leave-in conditioner and a deeply nourishing styler. Pureology’s MiracleFiller is a leave in that will give you a supple dose of protein while hydrating the hair as well. Choose a wet/dry styler like Redken’s Argon-6. This incredibly light oil goes on wet and melts over the hair in a protective shine while blowdrying. You can add a couple drops after your style is complete to get extra shine, nourishment and protection.

4. Stay away from too many hot tools. If you’re going to blowdry, skip the iron and vice versa. If you opt for the flat or curling iron, go to bed with a wet head and style in the morning.

Crawford gives the “how-to” breakdown on three must-have hairstyles.
First Look: The Bow
“For an incredible variation on a bun, try a bow! Instead of looking like a ballerina, look like a princess,” says Crawford. This chic and elegant style can easily be achieved with these simple hair how-tos from Jim:

Step 1: Start with dirty hair – it will allow hair to lie flat against your head and the natural oils will keep it shiny. Comb hair into a low ponytail and secure with a rubber band. Make sure the ponytail looks sleek and smooth by setting it with a strong, reliable hairspray like Aqua Net Extra Super Hold Hairspray #3

Step 3: Cut a piece a string, about 1 foot long and grab a friend to help!

Step 4: Make sure the ponytail is combed flat, then grab the end of hair and pull to the top of your crown.

Step 5: Have a friend wrap the piece of string under the ponytail, pull it over the ponytail and tie a knot to create the first loop.

Step 6: Put your finger horizontally above the knot and let the end hang down over it to create the second loop.

Step 7: Finish off the look by tying another knot to secure the bow!

Step 8: Hairspray, hairspray, hairspray! Apply a second coat of Aqua Net Super Hold Hairspray #3. Your hair should feel stiff, so that it will hold the style; leaving you with a shiny, feminine look.

Second Look: The Messy Braid
The Messy Braid is one trend that the stars have been rocking from season to season. “This style is a juxtaposition: soft and pretty at the face, but the back of the head should a beautiful disaster with twisted, intertwined texture,” says Crawford.

Step 1: Use Finesse Self Adjusting Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner to ensure hair is washed and well conditioned. Comb wet hair with a wide toothcomb, or your finger (it will leave your hair looking more natural) and allow hair to air dry or use a diffuser.

Step 2: Flip your head upside down and break apart the piecey strands, while lightly spraying Finesse Self Adjusting Hairspray on the middle the shaft to the ends and then scrunch your strands.

Step 3: Toss your hair back right side up and then toss your hair to both sides of head and spray with Finesse Self Adjusting Hairspray and scrunch the strands, holding the hairspray 10-12 inches away from your head. You want the middle to the end of your hair a little rough but not a tangled mess.

Step 4: Now that your hair looks like you just came out of the dryer, pull your hair back off your face without using any combs or brushes

Step 5: Start braiding your hair on the top of the crown, making sure your hair is close to the sides of your head, near your temples. The back can be loose and messy. Spray Finesse Self-Adjusting Hairspray to the braid as you near the nape of neck to hold the look.

Step 6: Secure the braid at the nape of neck with a rubber band and let the rest of your hair fall into a ponytail.  Leave the ends as they are, or tease them to make the style more full.

Third Look: Beachy Waves
“This is a great look to compliment striking makeup. When wearing strong looks on the face, you don’t want to look like you stepped out of Dynasty, so your hair should be softer and messier,” says Crawford.

Step 1:  Use Finesse Clean + Simple Shampoo and Conditioner to ensure clean hair.

Step 2: Part your wet hair in the center (this is a trend to follow!), making sure it is a clean part.  Collect 10 – 15 bobby pins or clips.

Step 3: Towel dry your hair, adding 2 golf ball sizes of Finesse Self Adjusting Mousse on the ends, then massaging it in the rest of your hair

Step 4: Blow dry hair upside down without a brush

Step 5: Create large pin curls by grabbing a 2 inch section of hair, spray Aqua Net Extra Super Hold Hairspray # 3 from roots to ends, then roll the strands from the ends around your finger, securing it at the roots with a pin.
 

Step 6: Repeat around your head

Step 7: Let hair set for 20 minutes

Step 8: Take out pins and run fingers through the hair

Step 9: You should have flyways and texture throughout!

1. Get Clear

In order to transform your health, energy and body, you need to take stock of where you are now, what you’re eating and what you want to change.

Write down everything. How you feel when you wake up? What cravings you have? What your diet is like? What is your exercise routine (if any)? What do you like to feel and look like?

2. Get Support

Talk with someone who has been there before. Read the blogs of experts, watch inspiring movies online or listen to radio shows on the area of health that interests you the most. Find a “tribe” of people who are dedicated to making the same changes you want to accomplish.

There is power in joining forces – they’ll pull you along, and you’ll help them at the same time.

3. Make a Plan

Do you want to eat more vegetables? Eat less sugar? Kick your caffeine habit completely? Do you want to lose 20 pounds, or clear up your skin?

What is the first step towards your goal? If it’s eating less sugar, maybe it’s time to learn about natural foods that give you the sweet sensation you’re looking for without robbing your energy (more on that in a minute).

Or maybe you need to throw away the sweets or chocolates lingering from the holidays. Or maybe there’s something in your lifestyle that triggers your sugar cravings that you can address in a non-food-way.

Whatever the issue is, there are steps you can take to make it a non-issue: start brain-storming on what to do first, then what you can do tomorrow, and in no time you’ll be free and clear.

4. Be Seasonal

Use seasonal, local produce as much as possible.

When you eat veggies from a nearby farm, they offer you the energy and nutrients that support you where you are and when you are.

For example, eating iceberg lettuce and watermelon north of the 45th parallel in winter does not support your body in the cold, sunless months. Instead, choose winter squash, cabbage, other hearty wintergreens, and apples and pears that winter over well. These fruits and veggies give you great, fresh nutrition rather than arriving depleted from half way across the world.

5. Sleep More

The human body is built to follow natural rhythms. Our inner body clock, called circadian rhythm, triggers the natural impulses to wake up with the sun, sleep when it’s dark, as well as a host of other natural body processes.

When your natural circadian rhythm is thrown off, due to jet lag or just staying up too late night after night, your body and brain work at half-speed, and your body feels off balance. Years of staying up late and not getting enough sleep during the darker, winter months, makes caffeine necessary, and cravings for sugar more intense.

This winter, try an experiment: go to bed early and wake up early. Get into bed by 9pm and wake up at 4 or 5am. Even a few days a week of this pattern will help you feel more refreshed, healthier, and those intense food cravings will release their hold on you just a bit more.

6. Make Breakfast a Priority

Now that you’re sleeping better, you can wake up earlier and get a good breakfast in your body. Everyone is different and you might need something that your partner or child doesn’t like or desire. Experiment with different types of food for your morning meal, alternating savory, sweet, liquid or combination breakfasts.

You might notice that a protein rich meal keeps you filled longer. Or perhaps you find that a light meal of fruit and herbal tea is perfect.

Try it out and notice what happens during the day with your cravings. Your first meal can determine your energy for the rest of the day.

7. Skip the White Foods

Any white, refined food is going to steal nutrients and energy from your body. This includes white flour, white sugar, and white table salt.

All of these foods are stripped of nutrition, vitamins and minerals, and offer only the jolt of carbohydrate or sodium. Without any supportive nutrients, your body must draw on its own precious stores to metabolize the refined food, leading to depleted energy over time.

8. Sweeten the Deal

Use more naturally sweet foods instead of relying on white foods, candy, and soda for energy.

Include sweet root veggies, fruits and even whole grains to satisfy your sweet cravings.

Sweet potatoes offer carotenoid antioxidant and help your body respond to insulin better. Parsnips are high in silicon and fiber and are high in calcium. Beets are high in boron, a mineral critical for the production of human sex hormones.

Adding daily doses of sweet veggies, you’ll crave less sugary treats, and you’ll be giving your body necessary nutrients for long-term health.

9. Move Your Body Like Your Life Depends On It – Because it Does

Whatever form of exercise you choose: running, walking, swimming, biking, dancing, weight lifting or machines – just move. Daily. As if it were your last day on earth.

If you incorporate anything from the list above you will be on your way to preserving or regaining your health and vitality in the New Year.

Brushes: Remove Hair, Clean and Sanitize Weekly
Use a brush cleaner designed with hard, wide-spaced, angled teeth on one end and longer bristles or wire on the other end. Try the Sam Villa Brush Cleaning Tool available on www.samvilla.com <http://www.samvilla.com> , or use the end of a tail comb and a toothbrush.

1.    Use the wide toothed end of the cleaning tool to rake through each row of bristles and pull up and out to remove tangled knots and hair at the base of the brush.

3.    Dry completely.

The timeless chignon is an ever-popular hairstyle, tailored to the individual and their style, all the while never losing its elegance. Caile Noble, master stylist at the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in LA, told us his secrets to creating the perfect bun.

Here are Caile’s tips for styling the perfect polished bun:

Step 1: Purposeful Product

Apply a styling product like smoothing cream or styling paste around the hairline, this will allow the hair to appear smooth with little to no fly-always when pulled back.

Step 2: The Lowdown

Using a flat brush, brush all the hair back into a low pony with plenty of tension, keeping the hair taunt and sleek.

Step 3: Subtlety Secure

Secure the pony in place by using an elastic band that is the same color as your hair.

Step 4: Twist

Then using the styling cream or styling paste, apply a small amount onto the pony while twisting the pony in one direction – this smoothes the pony down eliminating any fly-aways. Simply continue twisting the pony around the base until you achieve a sleek and smooth bun.

Step 5: Anchor

Finally, using bobby pins the same color as you hair, secure the bun into place grabbing the back of the bun with the pin and anchoring down behind the base of the ponytail.

HAIR:

o    Spray strands lightly to give hair texture, pliability and flexible hold.
