Way back in October, I received the full system from Knockout Nails to review and I’ve been playing with it ever since. Here’s my review of what just may be the coolest thing ever.

Background: With a super jammed packed schedule, I tried months ago the Gel nails from several salons to see if just maybe, I could save some time (and maybe money) on getting that weekly manicure that pretty much is gone 3/4 days after I get it, (which only leads to more time spent at the nail salon, sigh.)

The first salon I went to to try the new gel manicure, the manicurist turned me off so much that I vowed never to go there again (yes, I really loved you talking to me like a stupid 3 year old every time I had a question), but she did explain the difference between the gel manicure (gets taken off every 2/3 weeks) and the gel nails (gets touched up every month, similar to the acrylic nail.)

The gel manicure is taken off either by filing off or by soaking off. Find out which technique your nail gel brand does it by before you get it done. Tip: filing off every 2/3 weeks can damage your nails, especially if your naIls are on the thin side. So 3 weeks later I go to get them removed via soaking, only to find that the manicurist (another one) didn’t soak long enough and literally pulled off the bottoms of each of my nails. Not happy. Add that to the remove fee of $25 and the reapply fee of $55 and that easy peasy 2/3 week nail job gets expensive.

To the rescue (or should I say, my mailbox) Knockout Nails arrives.  What is it? It’s a do it at home yourself version of gel nails. Complete with UV light and a compete set of products to do it yourself, I went at it like a kid in a candy store. Could this be the answer to my prayers?

  • 3 Bottles of Knockout Nails 2-Minute Drying Polish
  • Knockout Nails Topcoat

Instructions

  1. Directions looks pretty easy enough. You take off any polish you have. Push back cuticles, then clean nails with Cleaner with the lint free cotton pads they provide.
  2. Next, apply the Bonder. It’s a clear water like polish. Easy.
  3. Then apply the Hardener. The Hardener is a thicker gel like polish that goes on pretty easy. Key is that it doesn’t get on your skin or cuticles. They recommend 2-3 thin coats which is where I think I goofed on the first trial run. My version of thin must be different than theirs.
  4. Between each gel Hardener coat, you pop your hands into the UV light, and with it’s self timer, the 2 minutes to cure goes pretty quick.
  5. All done? Then clean the surface of your nails again with the Cleaner. Viola: super shiny nails that look amazing.
Now you can apply any polish you’d like (as in yours) and super bonus: the polish lasts f o r e v e r.  No chips, nicks, nothing. I’m in heaven.
GOOFS: Well, 3 days into, I already got 4 nails that chipped off at the ends. Not just the color, but the whole gel.  Not happy at all, but then I realize, I don’t have to go the nail salon and pluck down money to redo, I can repair myself, at any time. Sweet. I also realize that maybe I applied 3 coats that were too thin. I did. I redo and apply slightly thicker coats and the nails last fine now.
LOVS: Polish never and I mean never chipped off. Once it’s on, nails are super shiny and thick.  Come time to redo as they grow out and I reapply as before. Their removal method is to file down the gel you have already applied, but I find that it doesn’t ruin my nails at all. I also only file down only when the gel has grown down pretty far.
I’m super thrilled with how they look, how it performs and my ruined nails from way before are growing out and getting stronger. I definitely will be buying from them once the bottles run out. I’ve been using it every 2/3 weeks since early November and still going strong.
PROS:
  • Do it yourself, anytime, anywhere.
  • Save $$$.
  • Nails are super shiny with gel alone.
  • You can use any nail polish color you already have.
CONS:
  • Bottles are super tiny, and you have no way of knowing when you are low.
  • With the Nail polish gifts you get, the colors aren’t that great.
