The Perfect Red Lip: The Right Red.

Red lips will be all the rage this Valentine’s Day, and while it’s super glamorous and just reeks of old fashioned ‘Mad Men’ glamour, it’s also the hardest look to do and keep on.

Looking for the right red in your shade? While there are a million red lipsticks out there, those red lipstick tube can be the most deceiving. Yep, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at a tube, loving the shade, only to apply and it’s nothing like it seems on. Too pinky, too burgundy, too orange, too brown. You’ve been there. Trick is to apply a swatch on white paper and see the actual colors in the red. Is there orange? blue? brown? Once you see the right red, then swatch on the inside of your wrist. How does it look? If it makes your skin look even and translucent, that’s the right shade. If it brings out every vein and mismatched shade, then keep looking.

Trick: The lighter your skin color, the bluer the red you can go. The warmer, or yellow/brown shades in your skin,the more orange, or rust you can go in your red.

One of my most favorite products is Mac’s Mineralize Duo Powder. Half matte, (which does a great job of mattifying..) it’s the shimmer side that gets me excited. The perfect application is a touch on the apples of the cheeks for the newest way to wear shimmer. So imagine my excitement when I saw their latest mineralize shimmer in a body lotion.

While most shimmer lotions seen to pale in comparison to the hype, (as in barely any shimmer… did I miss it?), MAC steps up to the challenge.

Mineralize All-Over Lotion

Made for both face and body, you get the exclusive diamond-infused charged water technology. Just what does that mean? How about a super soft feel, lightweight, free of fragrance, mineral oil, and colour. But definitely not free of shimmer. Use alone and you’ll see golden touches of shimmer on your skin that’s gorgeous.

You can also blend it with pigments or foundations to sheer out the product for a softer look. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll be applying this one straight for the sheer shimmer factor. So pretty.

A bit sticky too in texture, but believe me, you won’t mind as you’re happily licking your lips.

A New Definition to Beauty.

So just what is beauty nowadays? With the constant barrage of fakeness, as in plastic surgery, fake hair, fake eyelashes, and well, just about fake everything, a new study shows that beauty is not necessarily about outer beauty.
The Meredith Corporation [NYSE: MDP], a leading media and marketing company serving American women, today announced the findings of a nationwide survey examining how highly engaged Gamma women think and feel about beauty, as well as the motivations that drive their shopping behavior.

The Gamma Beauty Study, which included more than 5,000 respondents, is a follow-up to Meredith’s 2008 “The Gamma Factor: Women and the New Social Currency.*” That report identified Gamma women: a growing group of highly influential women who share and exchange information, ideas, opinions, contacts and recommendations with a wide-reaching network, using multiple media and channels of communication.

The new study indicates that Gammas’ holistic perspective extends to their view of beauty, both conceptually and in practice as consumers of health and beauty products.
Here’s what they found out:
Gammas Are Highly Engaged Beauty Consumers and Natural-Born Beauty Brand Advocates
·         Three-quarters (76%) of Gammas frequently recommend a well-liked beauty product to others vs. 56% for all U.S. women. Among Millennial Gammas, this behavior is even more prevalent, with word of mouth rising to 85%.
·         Two-thirds of Gammas try to buy beauty products that use organic/natural/sustainable ingredients (vs. just over half of US women).
·         64% of Gammas say anti-aging products are an important part of their beauty routine.
·         80% of Gammas consult magazines (vs. 53% US women) for tips and 62% (vs. 49% US women) go online for their beauty information.

Their Beauty Buying Habits
·         Gammas are statistically more likely to buy across most beauty product categories vs. all U.S. women, especially:
o        Facial moisturizers and cleansers
o        Sunscreens
o        Self-tanners
o        Skincare for men & children
o        Hair styling products

·         Mass retailers (79%) and drug stores (56%) are the most popular beauty shopping channels for Gammas, followed by department stores (45%) and supermarkets (36%).

·         One in five Gammas (20%) enjoy the convenience of shopping online for beauty.

·         74% of Gammas change their beauty routine with the seasons.

·         Most beauty purchases are planned vs. impulse buys, and Gammas are even more likely to plan (80%) their purchases than total U.S women (71%).

·         80% of Gammas say “I am loyal to a handful of beauty brands.”

Beauty Products Empower Gammas with Confidence; Experimenting Satisfies Self-Expression
For most women, how they look impacts how they feel. Gammas treat beauty products as a means of self-expression, experimenting with new products and spreading the word to their circle of friends.

·         61% of Gammas compared with 50% of all U.S. women report always looking for new beauty products to try.

·         Nine out of 10 Gammas say that makeup can make a woman feel more confident. This confidence extends to their positive self-image: 82% of Gammas feel they look better than they expected at their age.

·         8 out of 10 Gammas (vs. 69% of U.S. women) view a small beauty indulgence as an affordable way to reward themselves.

Women, especially Gammas, Are Re-defining “Beauty”
Inner qualities such as self-confidence, positive attitude, humor and intelligence trump external factors such as pretty features, great hair or a perfect figure, especially among Gamma women.

Bloom Foundation Stick

Ever on the quest for the perfect foundation, I was introduced to the latest from Bloom Cosmetics.

Their Stick Foundation only comes in 3 shades but I was surprised at how good the color matched. Another happy note was this is one of the few foundation sticks that I’ve found that is not greasy, oily, or fading and gone after about 2/3 hours of wear. Swipe on, blend and this covers fantastic. I also use this as a under eye concealer in a pinch as well (though use over a eye cream to help blend.) This lasted hours and I am thrilled at the non-breakouts, and non-shiny after effects from this. So if you have oily skin, or have problems finding a high coverage foundation stick that doesn’t melt off, this just might be it.

DIY Hair Color Tips

If you’re needing to save money in your beauty budget, try coloring your hair at home to save costly salon trips. But be sure to do it right, so as not create a color problem that needs to be fixed.
Follow these tips from Nicole Lynne from studio two, a patrick mcivor color studio, for a DIY job that looks professional, so no one will now that you were the colorist at hand.  “I suggest working with two colors – one that matches your target shade and another semi permanent color that is roughly two shades lighter than the targeted color. This will correct the issue of having a light base with overly darkened ends which is a common culprit of at home haircoloring,” explains Lynne.   Lynne’s DIY Application Tricks:  · Apply the darker color at the base of the hair shaft and process for about 20 minutes (or half of the time the manufacture’s directions require).   · Apply the lighter shade to the mid-shaft and ends and process for the remaining time required for base color.   For example, if your base color needs to process for 40 minutes, after 20 minutes, apply the lighter color from mid-length to ends and process until the 40 minutes is complete.   “Applying the lighter color with minimal processing time to the mid-lengths and ends, corrects the issue of over processing the ends which avoids the effect of a lighter base color with harsh, dark ends,” adds Lynne.   Keep that hair color fresh between visits with Matrix BIOLAGE colorcarethérapie Delicate Care for multi-processed and color-treated hair.

A heated lash curler, with a difference.

You’ve tried them haven’t you? A heated lash curler? Well, if you’ve been less than thrilled, there’s a new one on the market getting raves. While I haven’t personally tried it, let’s just say, it’s got me curious.
It’s the ModelCo’s LASHWAND Heated Eyelash Curler. And it’s turbo.
A new double heating coil gets to 60 degrees hot instead of 40, and curls at the root of the lash as well as mid-way.
You also get a inbuilt On/Off indicator light that lets you know when you’ve left if off, and also has an inbuilt lash comb to separate your lashes as you curl. Smart! And it’s battery operated so you can use it anywhere
Directions as on their website:
STEP 1 Insert AA battery. For best results apply ModelCo FATLASH or LASHXTEND mascara first. Turbo LASHWAND should be applied soon after applying mascara. Remove cap, turn switch to ‘on’ and wait approximately 60 seconds.
STEP 2 USE Turbo LASHWAND at the root of eyelash. Gently fold back lashes against eyelid and hold for approximately 20-30 seconds to obtain optimum curl.
STEP 3 To maintain optimum battery life, switch ‘off’ immediately after use. It should take no longer than 3 minutes to complete steps 01 & 02. Use inbuilt comb to comb through and separate lashes if necessary. Clean Turbo LASHWAND with brush provided to prevent mascara build up.
