			Every year, CEW presents their best of the best in beauty products (or as I’ll call it, my beauty mecca) and presents it to their CEW members to be viewed, tested, and voted on for the honor of receiving the coveted CEW Best of Beauty Award. Let’s just say it’s like the Oscars for the beauty world.


I was honored with an invitation to see the products that were being nominated and see first hand, what the best of the best had to offer in the past year of beauty.. and let’s just say it was like being a kid in a candy store. 


Wondering though aisles and aisles of beauty, in all categories, from perfume, to hair color, to body products, to eyeliners, mascaras and beyond, there were a few that immediately caught my eye that I just had to share with you.


So here I present my own little Best of Awards from the CEW nominees…. may the best man (aww, make that beauty genius) win!


The “Finally Someone who got it Right in Hair ColorTouch Ups” Award:
This goes to TouchBack by Colormark. Finally someone that understands the needs of women who color their hair and want to look amazing between those expensive and time consuming hair color appointments. Enter the Hair Color Marker. While others have tried, they don’t quite do it, as in too small applicator (takes forever to put on), formulation which dries the scalp, colors that are just weird, or such little product that you’re out in 2/3 applications. 


The Hair Color Marker is a wide tipped (say 1″) flat applicator, with color that won’t rub or flake off as it bonds to hair. Lasts until your next shampoo and removes with water if it gets on skin. Can’t wait to try this one personally myself.

The Most Heavenly Scent of the Night Award 
Goes to the amazing, we had no clue Kat Von D Fragrance in Saint. Where have we been? So heavenly and decadent, I wanted to eat it. With the scents of Mirabelle plum, mandarin, Tiare flower, musk and sandlewood, this was to die for, and yes, my new favorite scent. 




And the last but not least (yes, we saved the best for last…)





The Makes Me Wish I Was a Teenager Again Award:
We love those that think outside the box and bring out the kid in us, and while it may not be beauty related, the super chic inventor of the YoYo Retractable Lip Gloss rolled all those together into one. 


A mini lip gloss, on a retractable cord, with a clip to attach to your bag or purse. Genius. Oh, and we almost forgot. The colors and scents and, wait for it: taste, was to die for. I got the bubble gum and was happily licking away while my friend got the Chocolate. Our super chic presenter had her YoYo Lipglass bedazzled in crystals which made us revert even more into the glory days of when we were young.. awww, to be young again. Hint: Try this lipgloss, you’ll get there really quick. ;)

			So I get a request to review a new Ceramic Iron Gift Set, and though I have a few straightening irons, I have yet to find one I’m thrilled about. 			Well just when I was about to book a $250 facial peel (seriously), I get the latest from Exuviance in my mail to try, thanks to the savvy PR team that probably was reading my mind at that very moment. This easy 2 step system, called Performance Peel AP25, from NeoStrata had my name written all over it. So try it I did. And since 100% of users saw improvement in fine lines and wrinkles after only 1 month, well, I’d be crazy not to.


This incredibly easy to use 2 step packet makes the at home do it yourselfer jump for joy. 


Step One: Tear open Packet 1 and apply the Activator Pad over newly washed face, avoiding sensitive eyes, lips etc. Wait for intense stinging to begin, right? Well, make that a tiny prickle that literally is gone in seconds… and wait 10 minutes.


So wait I did, and 10 minutes later, my skin feels tight. Not dry tight, but a sort of film on the face tight. Nothing to worry about. My sensitive skin also looks pretty pink, like a mild sunburn but nothing to be alarmed at. I’ve actually tried skin peel type products that actually made my skin bright red, and/or super stinging. Not here. This is actually very doable.


Step Two: Apply Neutralizer Pad over face (or sooner if there is discomfort that you are not liking), and then rinse with water.


Then apply your moisturizer. Done!


How’s that for at home friendly? This 12 peels ( 6 week supply) is for use on hands, face, neck or anywhere you need a little extra help for retail of $60.00. Way cheaper than a salon peel.


You can actually use this up to twice a week (less if your skin is displaying symptoms more, like excess peeling or irritation….) but my skin after 2 weeks of using x2 per week, is looking glowy and soft. And darker areas of skin is looking lighter. Best is how moisturizer and foundation is just gliding on. And doing this twice a week for a month, has made my skin look and feel amazing. A definite must have.

			It’s a new mascara love affair going on here. Enter the newest mascara in the Clinique family. While I have to say, my mascara love affair began years ago, with Lancome’s iconic and amazing mascaras that were all to die for. But when formulations changed, and beloved mascaras started disappearing (cough, cough, Aquacils..) well, my loyalty went with it. Next I tried Mac’s mascaras. Sadly, while I loved how they all looked, my eyes just couldn’t handle wearing it. Within minutes of applying, my eyes will water, tear, and sometimes even burn, so alas, I keep looking for a that will give me great lashes, without the fuss and tears.


I was introduced to Clinique’s mascaras when I saw their Mascara Portfolio up on Sephora a while back. And while the little mini tubes of mascaras made me buy, it took awhile for me to get to them to actually try it. And once I did, many of them were dried out. So much for buy and try.


Enter, Clinique’s latest. NEW High Lengths Mascara.
Clinique High Lengths Mascara 
The unique comb looks very familiar to a Mac mascara that I tried and couldn’t use so I was cautious. But boy am I glad I did. I have to say this is one of my most fav mascaras to come across in a while.


What makes this really so unique and great is the comb. The curved wand lets you easily comb through the lash with a minimum of clumps and you actually see your lashes get longer and longer in front of your eyes. I mean insanely long. Even better is the inky black color. Super black and looks fantastic. Though this mascara doesn’t give major wow factor in the thickness department, you’ll be so impressed with the length that you really won’t mind. I didn’t. i could easily apply 3 coats without creating a lash clumpy mess, though 2 coats is just fine.


Even better? No reactions, no watery eyes, no tears, no itchy, burning. Just, no nothing.


ELKE’S TIP: Apply this mascara and at the tip of the lashes, hold the wand to ‘curl’ and hold the lashes up. Let the mascara dry for a touch. Let go. You’ve just given a super curl to your lashes as well.


CLINIQUE’S TIP: Use the tip of the wand to get the little comb to define and separate small lashes.


And yes, I think I’m having a mascara love affair…

If you’re loving the super glam makeup of Mad Men (just when is that show coming back? I’m in serious withdrawals here….)… well, you just know that that dramatic eyeliner effect is a definite part of the Mad Men, oh so hot retro look.




So when Maybelline sent their latest Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner, I just had to try it out for a super fabulous event I was going to.







Oil free, with pigments in a clear gel base, this stuff goes on super smooth and stays PUT. As in 24 hours. Smudge proof, waterproof and a great intensity in the pigment.  Product pros? This stuff stays on forever.


Now on the other hand, the eyeliner brush that comes with, looks like it would be great. Longer handled brush (well, longer than most in product placement brushes) than most, with super soft hairs.. that promises a thin or thick line approach to your application. But here’s when it gets tricky. If you’re not used to applying a liquid eyeliner, well, it’s all about how you hold the brush. Here, the brush is a lot thicker than the norm eyeliner brush.  How to apply? Use the side of the brush to get a thicker line, and just the tip of the brush for a thin line, or for getting that super thin wing tip flip out effect on the ends of the line.


Trick: For the best winged out placement, place the brush between the top and bottom lashes for the exact location every time, and then flip out the line. You’ll find you’ll get the same placement every time on both eyes, rather than trying to blend the flip into the end of the actual eyeliner line.


Want a more elegant line to your gel liner? Try your slanted angle brush. You’ll get a much thinner result because the brush hairs are thinner.

So here is another duo mascara product, with a 2 step process, or two wands of mascara to apply, instead of the normal one.  I’m used to seeing these as a primer and mascara combo (of which I’ve never really been too impressed) and let’s just say Elke’s been a tad busy lately, so upon seeing this, I thought it was a 1 side lengthening, 1 side volume mascara.  As in, one wand gives you a length, and the other gives you a thickening effect. This one, is the newest Maybelline XXL Pro 24 HR Bold Mascara.




Okay, I goofed. As in didn’t quite read the directions.  So here I am trying to apply this and one side goes one great, and the other, well, leaves a big question mark as in it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. Huh?




Okay, read the package Elke. What this really is is a 2 step waterproof mascara. Step One gives you a very thickening mascara, while the Step Two seals it and makes it waterproof.  Great idea, huh!




So, cool factor is Step One. Brushes one great and the consistency is like a gel. It’s not watery, not thick, and certainly not clumpy. After 2/3 coats, it brushes and applies on fantastic. And lashes get thick and long at the same time. So far, loving the look.




Step Two then seals the whole look with a black, though pretty much non-seeable coat that makes if into a 24 hour wear mascara. 




Bonus points is the non-feel aspect of the mascara, and it washes off with no problems.  I also don’t get the crunchy after effects and drying out syndrome that makes me want to pull my lashes out either.




Looking for a new waterproof mascara that doesn’t FEEL that way? Try this one. You just might be really pleased with it.

So I’ve been playing with the Creamy Ivory shade which is a touch lighter than my skin color, but happy to say that it covers my dark patches on my face nicely.  And yes, this stuff covers great.  But there’s a few things you gotta know about this foundation if you’re tempted to try it.


First off, the sponge ball tip applicator. While the idea sounds great, and looks great in theory, it really doesn’t work that well. It’s too small to do that great a job. It does apply it on, but because the sponge is too small, it tends to streak in on in long rows that you end up having to use something else to blend it in with anyway. I tend to use my fingers after I’ve rubbed in on.  The cool part is the ‘eraser’ factor. You can literally see it ‘erase’, (meaning lighten) the areas on your skin, and it is buildable as well.  Note to Maybelline: they may want to try a smaller version of the sponge ball applicator for a under eye covering product, which might work better because you’re covering a small space.


The next thing to get use to was the ‘feel’ factor. It’s actually quite slippery and greasy as it goes on. Not sure what ingredient is doing this but it’s really an oily feel to the product as it slips on. But, give it a minute and the foundation doesn’t look shiny at all, or feel that way.  So while I’m waiting for a whitehead or blackhead here to creep up, after a solid week of usage, nothing has happened yet. Usually with me, I’ll get something in 2/3 days of use.


Also, while the feel is slippery going in, just set with a touch of powder and it’s gone and any shine (though very slight) is gone as well. How does it last? Great. Hours later and it looks like I just applied it, with no creasing or fading.  And yes, after days of wearing it, I’m still reaching for it when I do my makeup in the a.m.


CONS:



    

  • The slippery feel, though it goes away.

  • The sponge ball applicator is a weird size and doesn’t do that great a job applying.

  • The non feel and coverage of the product.
    • 

  • No creasing or fading.
    •

Inspiration : Nature’s celestial landscapes- think of the nighttime sky and imagine a full moon peaking behind the clouds. 
Overall Look : The moonlit eyes are mysterious, while the complexion and lips have a cloudy, hazy feel. 


eyes: Silvery, moonlit eyes-a silvery/black smoky eye without edges and just a touch of blue. The eye is almost 3D, rounded and mysterious. 


direction: Think of the eye as a rounded sphere or planet. The inner crease of the eye is darkened up to the brow with the shimmery deep blue gray (eyeshadow in lucy I’m home). The outer area is rounded, softly muted blackness. The center of the eye is the lightest, with darker edges (inner and outer corner of eye) ending in black (eye couture palette). Apply blue lagoon only in the center of the top and lower lids. Blend the blue into the gray and then into a bit of the black. There should be a bit of the blue and silver gray (eye couture palette) blended in the center of the lower lashline. Apply smolderEYES in the inner rim of the eyes. Top it off with a coat of lights, camera, lashes! mascara on the top and bottom lashes (no curling needed). Leave eyebrows-do not fill in. After finishing the eyes, clean underneath with the eraser 4-in-1 natural concealer .

			Hourglass MUA Michael Pierce created LA PERLA’s Fall 2010 Collection Preview which took place at the Lehmann Maupin gallery in NYC on the first day of Fashion Week. 


Michael shares his inspirations and how he created the look. “LA PERLA is known for stunning, one-of-a-kind lingerie,” say Michael Pierce. “Women simply feel beautiful when wearing their pieces and when creating the makeup, I wanted to reflect the inner-confidence and radiance that comes with wearing LA PERLA.” 


Look # 1: 
For the LA PERLA collection, I was inspired by 40s Hollywood – Veronica Lake and other silver screen sirens. The focus is on a gorgeous, strong red lip, but a red that every woman can wear. LA PERLA is beautiful, sexy and feminine and nothing portrays a woman’s beauty like the ability to wear a truly stunning red. Hourglass’ “Raven” lipstick is gorgeous and sexy– and works for all women. To add to this look, the eyes are light with tight black eyeliner. 


Get-the-look: 
Skin: Michael used Veil Fluid Makeup for medium coverage and set it with Oxygen Mineral Powder for a modern, semi-matte approach to 1940’s skin. He followed it with Illume in Bronze Light- using the bronze to contour the cheekbone and the highlighter for strong definition. 
Eyes: He sweeped the natural sand shade from Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy from the lash line to the brow for a glowing luminous eye. Followed by Calligraphy liquid eye liner in Ebony which he winged out in an upward direction for a thin lined look. He then finished it with Film Noir mascara (new for Fall) for an intense & dramatic black. 
Lips: He traced the lips with Trace Lip Liner in Message. He then filled it with Raven lipstick (new for Fall) and added a dab of Prodigy lip gloss in Hypnotic in the middle to create the perfect pout. 


Look # 2: 
The LA PERLA Studio collection is an edgier look that is Tribeca-inspired. She is an urban woman that is fearless and owns her city – like she owns her beauty. For this, I created a messy, dark eye with a nude lip in order to portray an independent, inspirational beauty. 


Get-the-look: 
Skin: Michael created rich and dewy skin with Illusion Tinted Moisturizer. He used Hidden Concealer in Pearl, a shade lighter than the skin tone, to lift up the cheek bones and intensify the hallow. He also used Oxygen Mineral Powder in a darker shade than the skin tone to contour the cheek bones. 
Eyes: Using Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Prism, Michael combined the two colors and used his fingers for a smudged, unblended look– heavier on the outside of the eye. He then took Extreme Sheen lip gloss in Reflect and added it to the eye lid for an edgy, well-worn look. He wetted a small lip brush and created a muddy consistency with the darker shade of Prism to tight line the eye- added to the inner, upper rim of the eye. Last, He used Film Noir mascara (new for Fall) for a powerful black. 
Lips: To complete the look with a nude lip, Michael used Adorn in Poetry and Trace in Bare. 


Look #3: 
The Villa Toscana collection is soft and feminine and was created for everyday women. The makeup reflects this with a focus on flawless skin. I used a minimum of product to define her features and a neutral full lip with tight defined eyes. My philosophy here is that a woman should wear her makeup, the makeup should not wear her. 


Get-the-look: 
Skin: This look is all about soft and natural skin. To create this glow, Michael used Illusion Tinted Moisturizer, which has a slight shimmer. He then used Illume in Bronze Light and the blush from Illume in Sunrise to add luminosity. 
Eyes: To create a soft innocent eye, Michael sweeped the eye lid with the natural shade from the Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede. He then wet his brush and reapplied the same color to the eye for a glossed effect. 
Lips: Like rest of the look, he maintained a natural beauty and created a natural, full lip with Prodigy lip gloss in Surreal and Trace lip liner in Bare.

			I got the latest from Hourglass cosmetics, and it’s a beauty. They call it Prodigy, but I’ll call it a super chic, sleek new look to a lip gloss. The super thin, streamlined package is just gorgeous looking with its burnished metal on one side and the preview of the color on the other. Think like a small cigarette case, but beautified. Fits into a pocket or a small evening bag perfectly. (Though who carries makeup in pockets anymore?)


So, gushing over the look aside, how about the actual product? Think sheer, (yes, sheer, but you still get a good color wash) and I got to play with the light Surreal shimmering peachy shade, that’s super shiny and shimmery, yet still sheer. Beautiful on and works great also over a lip color. What I loved was the feel of it. Super sleek, almost like Khiel’s lip balm. Non sticky, feels great on. Only sad point is that it doesn’t stay on as long as I’d like and within an hour I would have to reapply, and that’s without eating or drinking involved. But still, showing off this gorgeous lip gloss out doesn’t’ bother me in the least.
