PRODUCT REVIEW:Shick Intuition Shaver

What is it with me and shavers lately? I’m a makeup artist. I love makeup. Give me a brush, a new lip gloss and I’m such a happy girl. But shavers? Not really my expertise you know?

But in a goodie bag gotten at some big beauty event somewhere, some time ago, was this.

Shick’s Intuition Shaver.

And off course, the one I had just went dull.. so use I did.

It was so great.

It was so weird.

It, well, worked amazingly, unbelievable well.

Great as in, it’s a shaver and a self-moisturizing, shave cream, or balm I guess you could say (conditioning sticks they call them) in one. Just wet the shave part, and shave. Done. Great as in you don’t have to pull out a can of shaving cream, or another product to get a close shave. It’s literally an all in one product. Fast. Quick. Loved.

Okay, weird? As in, well. I so want to love this. But the rubbery pieced kinda plastic handle part is big, clunky and just so cheap, in looks and feel. I almost felt like I was shaving with a toy. (Keep your kids away from this.. because they WILL think it’s a toy.. mine was in a lime green shade..) And weird as in after only 3 shaves, the cream, balm like container that’s around the blade is literally almost gone. (you have to rinse off between strokes, which kinda makes the product kinda melt, as in go away…) And as the cream part melts down, you wonder how it’s going to work, because it’s melting down below the razor. The razor actually moves and pushes down into the handle as you use it… which makes me think I’ll cut myself, but I don’t.

And of course, amazing and unbelievably well as in, gosh darn it. I literally got the closest, most moisturized shave EVER. As in no lotion as needed after, no cuts, no nicks, no …… just the most amazing skin I’ve ever felt after a shave. Yes, a SHAVE. I almost wish had a boyfriend at the moment who could partake in the feel of it… it’s that amazing…. It took everything I had not to walk up to perfect strangers and ask them to feel my legs…. really.

Love the quick factor.

The one less product needed in the shower.

The after silky smooth results.

Now let’s see how long this thing lasts….. (hmmm 3 more shaves to go ????…)

I was invited to a webcast from CoverGirl, to view the latest gotta have, gotta do summer looks. I was so excited. First off, I don’t think I’ve ever actually ’seen’ a webcast… specially an exclusive, invite only one. CoverGirl’s makeup artist showed on 3 models, step by step looks to try with their new Eye Enhancers eye shadow.

The next day, I got said Eye Enhancers in my mailbox. So try I did.

First off, let me just say that CoverGirl really hasn’t been on my radar since say, high school? Not that anything’s wrong with it, but I never really took much notice of it and always thought of it as a teeny bopper line. And that I’m so not. (Well, maybe in spirit…)

At first glance, the Eye Enhancers shadows are bright, bold, vibrant. Very similar to Hip’s colorful line. Groan. As in vibrant bright blue, teal, fuschia…. in singles, trio and quartet shadow palettes. Like I’m going to walk around the streets of Manhattan with peacock blue eyes. Nope. So not me.

But the webcast made me think different. After seeing the oh so pretty looks I just had to play. Boy am I glad I did.

Bright greens, blues on the eyes. Pretty no?

Okay, maybe I’m not as adventurous, but I tried their 4 pan palette in #223/Dynamic Drama. As part of their Blast Collection, you get loads of colors to choose from. This one is actually kinda tame. A beautiful shimmering plum, shimmer gold, a shimmer off white and a shimmer lime green. The lime green actually got me interested.

So apply I do, lime green on the lids, the off white on the bone, the beautiful plum on top of black liner on the top lashes. i never got so many compliments in one day. And the best part? After literally a whole day working away, about 6 hours later? I look and all shadow is still there, perfectly in place as if I just applied it. No creasing, no fading. Nothing. I kid you not.

I may be all grown up now. And I’m sure glad CoverGirl has too. I think we might just be BFF.

Got the makeup, now what?

I got a great email from a reader thanking me for my post on makeup and my quick trick about putting your top items in a basket for easy access.. you’re welcome!

But her question was, “got the makeup, now what? as in, what do you do with it? What kind of a look am i doing?”

Great question.

And I got the fun solution. I have on the wall next to my makeup table, a corkboard, with images and tearsheets from magazines, and print outs from makeup lines online from their latest makeup collections of makeup looks I like and want to copy. LIke these:

From Clarins:

idea? the colored eye

From Aveda:

idea? a matte red lip

From Shu Uemura

idea? the colorful eye

From Sephora

idea? love the contouring

Not that I’m going to duplicate the whole look, but each image gives me an idea.. an eye, a lip. Just something that sparks me and thinks, hmmmm, today I want to look like that.

I don’t use it every day, but on those days when my brain just is NOT working? Saves me valuable time. And the fun part again? Just change it up every season, or every month, or whenever the mood strikes me. Or I see a new tearsheet in a magazine I like? Up it goes. A constantly changing portfolio of makeup ideas just when I need it.

Like 8 a.m. this morning..

Okay, just mention peach and gold shimmer and you so got me. I’m just not a pinkie kinda girl. Pink lips? Too Barbie doll for me. So when I got the info about the new lip gloss from ModelCo, well, I so gotta get a try on.

Though this comes with a lighted cap (seen this before, doesn’t work really well, because who applies lip gloss with the wand facing directly to their face?) it’s the color I want to see.

MSN Beauty Tips #1

MSN posted a big ole list of beauty tips, of the likes of which I have hardly seen before. Interesting no? So I decided to actually see if I could use them and if they would work. I mean, why not? I’m all about the makeup tip and trick, and hey, if it really works? I’m so in beauty heaven.

So tip #1.

1) Powder Your Roots

If your hairline starts to look greasy, dig up a big, fluffy makeup brush, and dip it into a pot of loose powder. Tap it once on the back of your hand to remove the excess, then dust it over your roots. It mops up oil and blends into your strands, so no one will know you didn’t shower.

Yep, this actually does work, but with an exception. Blondes tend to have an easier time with this trick because the powder will blend into the hair more. Brunettes? Um, not so much. What we end up getting is fuzzy gray roots instead. Why? The beige powder mixing with the dark hair makes it look ah, gray.

Instead, try a invisible powder. They’re out there, hard to find, but boy do they work. For both face and hair.

Allison Raffaele made one of the first ones and in my opinion, the best one.

RAWColor Foundation Brush

I found amongst my makeup items, a brush that I somehow just grabbed in an effort to do my makeup. Quick.

See the brush on the upper right? That’s it. “Maximum Coverage Founation” brush from Signature RAW mineral makeup line.

Though it’s meant for mineral makeup, in my haste, I found it worked great also in applying liquid makeup as well. Just pick up foundation on the tips of the bristles, and sweep and blend on. It applied and blended and it also kept the foundation on the surface of the skin. So you get more coverage in the process as well.

Now if only this website would make it easy to find and buy. Unless you sign up for an account, sorry. No go. You can’t even get access to the product line or see what they have. But if you find a brush that’s similar? So try this trick….

Make a product work for you.

There’s nothing I hate more than getting a product and then. Nothing. It does nothing. Case in point. A new blush. Great color, great packaging. Can’t wait to get it on.

Brush, stroke, sweep.

Nothing.

No color, no nothing.

Nothing infuriates me more.

Or even worse. You sweep on, looks great. Check 1 hour later. Gone.

As in disappeared.

Groan.

Frustrating when it happens.

Easy to fix. How?

Take your regular blush brush (remember, you want the brush to fit the apple of your cheek when you smile. Does it? Perfect size.)

Then take a mister bottle of water. I have an old Aveda toner bottle that I love (that pretty green glass) and fill with water. Mist your brush with water. Pick up your color blush as usual. Apply.

Note: It will go on slightly darker, or brighter than you see. But that’s the point right? Sweep on. Smile. And best part? Because your blush is swept on slightly damp, your blush will last hours longer.

I promise.

A great humid summer month trick.

Are you in as big of a rush as I am most mornings? It used to be that I had at least the time to go through my morning blog reads, get a cup of coffee, and relax a bit. Then get dressed, makeup ready and out the door. Now it seems like I barely have time to get out the door.

And sadly, I seem to only get frantic when I have to apply my makeup. Which actually used to be the most fun part of my day. But now? Sigh….. Where does the time go?

Then I remembered a trick I wrote about years ago. The makeup basket trick. Why didn’t I remember this sooner? Cause it really does work.

It’s actually quite easy and fun really. Get a really pretty basket, wire or otherwise like the one above. Just something that looks pretty and holds a fair amount of stuff without the eggs of course. This is your makeup basket. This is where all your favorite makeup items go. You know, the products that you grab, apply and it just works. Every time. That foundation, that blush. That concealer. Your one of each makeup find. I’m sure you can find your favorites in all the makeup you have.

Now throw in (or get another smaller basket if you want) the items that you’ve been wanting to try and haven’t done so yet. That new eye shadow. That new summer lipstick shade. And throw in that basket. This is your latest, newest, haven’t tried it yet basket with the latest items from your favorite collection.

LIke the new Summer Collection from Chanel:

There you go. Your works every time items, and your gotta try it items.

Now every morning, go through and apply your makeup from what’s in your basket(s). And only your basket. You’ll find that your makeup gets put on sooo much faster. Why? You’re not hunting them down. You’re not trying to find that one product. It’s just all there. And the part to remember is that it’s not the time applying makeup that takes time. It’s the time looking for it.

Now the best part is you can switch it anytime you want. I switch mine every week. Cause I just get bored really. And then it also keeps my makeup look fresh also, plus it saves valuable time and it’s fun in the process.

Elke’s Summer Must Have Beauty Products

Now that summer is finally here, as in warm weather, humidity and the occasional (ok, make that almost every day) flash flood shower, I find myself reaching for more than just my makeup in the morning. I’m reaching for my summer favs and must haves, that can get me through the humidity and still make me look good at the end of the day.

So what are my current summer lovs? (Subject to change without beauty notice, of course…)

1. Bronze Goddess Body Oil Spray by Estee Lauder

I think I’ve blogged about this way too many times, but still. A spritz of this stuff and I’m so pretending I’m in Hawaii. Enough to make me brave the humidity here in NY and oversee the muggy, sweaty day that can lie ahead of me. Humidity? What humidity? I’m on a glorious tropical (name your favorite here) island y’all. One spritz of this stuff and it’s coconut suntan oil musky scent just takes me there. I don’t think I can brave the hot summer months ahead without it.

2. MAC Belightful Iridescent Powder

This was so made for summer and the MAC Fafi shimmering bronzer is perfect. Just dust a bit on shoulders, cheekbones and you’re ready for that hot summer date. Nighttime required wearing.

3. Wet n Wild Mega Shimmering Loose Dust

I’ve taken to adding a touch of this on my lips with a super shiny clear lip gloss over. Golden Poppy is a fav and at only a few dollars, this extra sparkle puts a spring in my step and a sparkle in my eyes, as well as my lips.

4. RedPoint Age Minimizer Line Filler

More a primer than a line filler, I find that this under my mineral makeup, keeps it on hours longer. Lightweight in feel and I don’t feel the need to powder.

5. Too Faced Shimmer Veils

I’ve taken to lightening up the eyes and replacing that dark smoky eye (yes, I know trend wise it’s “IN” but really, who wants to apply and maintain on a hot summer day? puleeze) with a soft shimmering sweep of color instead. My fav? Pixie Dust in Sparkling Lime.. don’t laugh. On brown eyes it’s just the thing to liven things up a bit and it’s a soft sweep of color that makes me smile when I see it. Keep it simple, just do along top eye lashes instead… or if you’re brave, try on the whole eye lid.

I got the one in Platinum, a silver sleek model, with it’s travel cap auto-shut off feature (super cool) and designed just for travel.

Since I was ready for a trip to Los Angeles, I was all excited to try out the new travel iron…

Best part:

This iron heats up super fast once you figure out the little tiny on switch on the inside of the iron.. though this iron didn’t get as hot as others I have (??) it did work smoothing sections of hair around my face, and the travel size was not so small that it didn’t take forever to do the job. This travel size is really more of a medium size if you ask me.

Funny part:

The silver iron with it’s travel cap on top, literally makes the iron look like a, ahem,.. dildo. I kid you not. To the point that I took the cap off when I traveled with it in my carry on so that I wouldn’t be called out on it as I go through security. At first glance, I thought maybe it was just me being weird, but everyone I showed it to said the same thing.. as in ‘oh my god!”.. not quite the reaction you look for when you’re showcasing a new flat iron.

Also, the travel cord is so thick and long, that again, I really wouldn’t call it a travel iron. I can literally straighten my hair from across the room with this thing and lord, try to wrap it up when you’re traveling.. it just doesn’t wrap around the iron very well and easily slips off to make more of a mess in your bag. Not quite travel friendly.

So just forget it’s a travel iron, don’t take it anywhere out in public (ahem!) and you might just like this one.

And for that price, I kinda would wish for an iron that didn’t embarrass me. You know? (hint: get the pink, purple or green one instead..)
