]]> We know the Chinese New Year already happened, (it went from late January to early February), but we had to share this really cool look from Pure Ice to commemorate the occasion.

According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, the Dragon is the 5th sign of the Chinese zodiac and it is regarded as an auspicious symbol which stands for power, good luck, success, and happiness. (yeah!)

Since ancient times, the Chinese New Year was considered as the time to honor ancestors and heavenly deities. In addition, it was the time to organize family gatherings and grand feasts.

There is a legend associated with the celebration of New Year in China. There was a monster named Nian who used to harass the villagers by eating their crops, cattle and taking away their kids. The villagers had no other option but to place food at the entrance to their homes so that the monster would eat it and go away without harming them.

One day, the villagers realized that the monster was scared of red color. So, they adorned their doors and windows with red paper cutouts and spring scrolls. The villagers also burst crackers to frighten the monster. Since then, Nian never came again to the village. Hongjun Laozu, a Taoist monk, was the one who captured the beast later on. Since then, the Chinese have been celebrating the capture of Nian on their New Year’s Day.

Chinese New Year is celebrated with fireworks, lion dancing, dragon dancing and cultural performances on the street. Families organize reunion dinners on New Year’s Eve and make special preparations like spring rolls and Chinese dumplings.

Here? Well, we’ll just celebrate with a super cool new look for nails….

]]> Frank Barbosa, co-owner of Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup (Newport, RI) and top theatre and film stylist (Ragtime, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Bride Wars, Sex and the City) is bringing back the European Blowout – and his clients can’t get enough!

“They’ve been doing this type of blowout in Greece and Germany for years, it’s a fast and easy way to achieve smooth bouncy volume quickly, so it’s great on set, as well as for salon clients,” explains Barbosa.

European Blowout

·       Apply a gel or lotion to towel dried hair to reduce frizz and add hold (try Rene Furterer Vegetal Styling Straightening Gel or Redken pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray)

·       Section hair  - the more sections, the more brushes needed. The average European Blowout uses around 12 brushes.

·       Brush each section up and over direct it with a Sam Villa Signature Series Round or Oval Brush. Wrap each section around the brush rolling away from the face, leaving the brush in (securing like a Velcro roller set).

·       Continue around head until each section is wrapped in a brush.

·       Blow dry until dry

·       Let cool

·       Take brushes out and style as usual

NOTE: If pressed for time, stretch-dry each section ¾ of the way and leave the brush in.  Continue around the head until each section is wrapped and complete the drying process with a Sam Vila E-T.C. Light Blow Dryer or under a head dryer. Let cool, take brushes out and style as usual.

At the Hollywood premiere of “Joyful Noise,” Queen Latifah made her way to New York City with co-star Dolly Parton for an appearance on the Today Show.  Flashing her newly manicured nails, Queen Latifah was wearing celebrity favorite Dashing Diva DesignFX Bling Appliqués on her fingers.

]]> We got the latest scoop from Erika Katz (author of Bonding Over Beauty) on the coolest do it yourself Valentine’s Day beauty tips and recipes.  Here are some great ideas to make as gifts or just treat yourself!

Valentine’s Day Beauty

Bubble Bath

1 /4 cup liquid Castile Soap (you can find this at the drugstore)

2 drops Red food coloring

10 drops rose oil or your favorite essential oil

Rose petals.

To make:

Mix the castile soap, food coloring, and rose oil.  If this is a gift, pour it into a pretty bottle and attach a fresh rose.  If you are using it right away, add your mixture to running bath water and sprinkle your bath with rose petals.  Soak for as long as you like.

Strawberry Peppermint Foot Scrub

2 pureed strawberries

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and

2 tablespoons of granulated white sugar

4 drops peppermint essential oil

To Make:

Mix all the ingredients well and put into a pretty jar.

I like to use strawberries in this recipe because they are rich in salicylic acid which helps dead skin shed more easily. The sugar granules also help to exfoliate skin but are super gentle on delicate skin.  You can keep this in the fridge for up to a week.  To use your scrub, simply rub your feet gently in circular motions and rinse with warm water.

Exfoliating Lip Gloss

2 tablespoons Crisco solid vegetable shortening

1 teaspoon cherry or strawberry flavored powdered drink mix

lip balm container or clean contact lens container

To Make:

Heat the Crisco in the microwave for 30 seconds or until it looks like a liquid.  While it is still hot, mix in the powdered drink mix.  Then, pour the mixture into the lip balm container.  Let it cool for 10 minutes.

 

Luxurious Muscle Soak

1 cup Epsom salts

1/4 cup sea salt

5 drops pink food coloring

10 drops of your of your favorite aromatic essence (I like jasmine and peppermint for this soak)

To Make:

Mix the salts and then add the food coloring.  Using a fork, mix well so the food coloring is distributed evenly.  Add the aromatic essence and stir well.  Put it in a pretty jar to give as a gift or add it to your bath and soak.

I love Valentine’s Day because you can show your love an appreciation for anyone in your life.  Making something special lets people know you were thinking of them.  So, try these easy recipes and make it a Valentine’s Day to remember.
