Here are some things to consider before booking an eyebrow appointment.
To tweeze or wax?
That depends on the type of hair you have for your brows. Thicker, coarser hair responds best to waxing because you are more likely to get the root, therefore slowing down hair growth. Though thicker hair will almost always grow back (sorry!), you’ll get results that lst longer with waxing.
Thinner, lighter hair likes tweezing because you can keep most of it’s shape without worrying about hairs not growing back. If you have thin hairs, be very careful with waxing along the eyebrow line. These hairs probably won’t grow back, since thin hair if finer and weaker, hairs usually don’t grow back. Ask any blonde that’s gotten her light blonde hairs waxed. And if it’s a bad wax job? You’ll be stuck with an eyebrow shape that may not grow back at all.
Always request that stray hairs between the brows and way below the brow to be waxed, while the hairs along the brow line are tweezed. That way you can play and change the shape when you want with eyebrow hairs that will grow back.

The infamous, oh so popular slanted tweezer. And yes, Tweezerman makes the best one out there. They just do. But each tweezer has it’s pros and cons and best how to use tidbits. So let’s see what works for you. Is it the slanted tweezer?
The Slanted Tweezer is the easiest tweezer to use so it’s great for beginners. Easy to hold and easy to work with and no worry about poking or stabbing yourself as you tweeze away. The slanted tips make sure that you can easily grab the hair with a wider surface to work with and there’s no pinch factor with slanted tweezers. So if you’re starting out, slanted tweezers are the best choice. And yes, good tweezers should last you as lifetime. Forget spending $5 on drugstore brands (though some do work, but you have to search for it and not all drugstore brands have great tweezers in their entire line.. looking for a cheaper slanted pair for travel or such? Try Revlon’s…)
When working with the slanted tweezer, most people take the tweezer and hold the tips directly on the skin, so that the tweezer is pointing away from the face. The slant is placed even on the skin, but then the tweezer is actually in your way as you try to work it. An easier way is to hold the tweezer almost against the face, and work from the side of the hair. Grab the hair with the tweezer and then slide the tweezer against the skin as you pull. You’ll find that it’s virtually painless this way. Why? You’re not pulling the skin up. That is what creates the ‘ouch’ when tweezing. By keeping the skin still as you pull, you’ll have a much easier time of it. For even greater pain free tweezing, hold the skin down with your other hand as you tweeze. Place your thumb on the front of your eyebrow and your forefinger at the end of the eyebrow. Then stretch the skin tight between your two fingers. Pain free.
I find when I work on clients, slanted tweezers work the quickest and get the hair every time. Fine hairs like this tweezer because the wide slant grabs it easy and a lot of hair gets tweezed quickly because I find myself not ‘missing’ as I work. If I need to work quick, these are the tweezers I grab first. And when I do, clients always comment how fast I am. I can be fast because the tweezer lets me.
So to sum up, use your slanted tweezers when you need to:
1. work quick
2. tweeze fine hairs
3. tweeze a lot of hairs
4. tweeze for the very first time, for beginner tweezers…

Back in the 90s, I used to pluck my eyebrows very very thin, and as a result of years and years of plucking, today I am left with pretty thin eyebrows.

I recently got a pair of RED tweezers to try out. No, not the color red, the brand!
Cool point: totally inexpensive.
Cool brownie point: these totally work.
No sticking factor, grabs the hair really easy and I find that the pointed tweezer is their star tweezer. Now I’m not really a fan of pointed tweezers. Too close to the eye and one false move and ouch. I just don’t want to take that chance on myself or my clients. But I was wonderfully surprised. THIS pointed tweezer actually works. I find myself using it to get those little tiny black dots of hair right as they’re coming in. And this tweezer gets them all. I use this tweezer (and I use about 5 different ones based on what I’m needing during the course of working on a client…….) at the very end of the service. I just go and get all the little baby fuzz and little black dots for a completely clean, perfect eyebrow. Because I can get them when the hairs are really short, I’ve been told by clients that their tweezing service lasts just as long as waxing.
Now THAT’s a tweezer I am totally fond of.

Beauty in Real Life, (that’s a super cool blog by the way, run by two moms. Jennifer and Christine) did an interview iwth me, called, “5 Minutes, 5 Questions” Read on!
Recently we were able to interview the fabulous Elke Von Freudenberg, who just so happens to be having a new collection of eyebrow goodies coming out. Called The Elke® Brow Collection, it premiers August 3rd.

Okay…now we’re gushing…but seriously…she’s worked on celebrities and she works in LA and NY.
Lucky for us, she was able to take a break from her hectic schedule and answer some questions for us.
Here is our interview with her for our 5 minutes, 5 questions…..
In your opinion, what is the one mistake most women make when it comes to their eyebrows?
In over 20 years of shaping eyebrows, I’ve noticed that women either do 1 of 2 things. They either pluck way too much, or they don’t do anything at all! Some clients tend to pluck too much, or they do the 1/2 circle shape, which is a way of trying to create an arch which doesn’t work. The arch never comes from the middle of the brow. It comes from the beginning to the arch. If there’s not enough hair, it’s very hard to create an arch. Or they don’t do anything at all, afraid that they might ruin what shape they do have, but then they are left with no shape at all. Eyebrows don’t have to be tweezed down to 2 rows of hair to look good. It’s about creating and emphasizing the shape that your eyebrow is already doing and making it stronger. You get a very signature look that way that is yours alone.Okay…I’ve over-plucked…what should I do now?
Leave them alone if you can for 2 weeks. Don’t touch them. And then use your facial scrub on your eyebrows 1-2 times a week for about a month. You’ll notice your eyebrows growing in. Also, don’t feel you have to wait 3 months for your eyebrows to grow in before you can get your eyebrows on track again. I’ve easily reshaped and modified eyebrows 2 weeks after a tweezing mishap which can get your eyebrows back in shape again.

It takes about 64 days for eyebrow hair to grow in after it is tweezed. Yep. That’s a long time. And even worse, hair grows in two cycles. So once you’ve tweezed a hair, the next hair that grows in is not the one you just tweezed, which is why hair never seems to grow back in the same spot. Have you noticed?
So what I always tell my clients? When in doubt if you should pull an eyebrow hair?
