A defined eyebrow arch can take years off your look – aestheticians call it a mini eye lift.
“Eyebrows do much more than frame the eyes,” says
makeup artist and eyebrow specialist Elke Von Freudenberg. “They also tell others around you a story – your story. Are you confident? Tired? Sad? Powerful? Once women have had their eyebrows done terribly wrong, they realize the importance of eyebrows and what they tell others about you.
“The goal of perfect eyebrows is to have people notice your eyes and you, not your eyebrows.”
Von Freudenberg recommends taking an extra row off the bottom of the inner portion of the brow to create more space and widen and open the eyes. She also adds a soft highlight shadow to wake up the eye (check out the how-to online) and distract from the hairs that grow in between grooming appointments.
Von Freudenberg’s “The Brow Collection” is a line of products that allows anyone to create their own look. She also offers personal tips on how to use each piece. For example, her new Lash Brow Groomer includes a brush side and a comb side. Elke’s tip: Use the brush side to brush brows up as you tweeze and shape them. (As you brush upward, you can get a better idea of the line and shape of your brows.) Use the comb side to comb and hold brows in place to trim.
Her line also includes brow pencils, shadows and additional brushes.
Von Freudenberg has been called the fashion industry’s “Queen of Brows” and her Web site,
http://thebrowcollection.com, offers many free tips and step-by-step guides to perfecting your eyebrows.

Brow Myth: #1

Can I tweeze above the brows?
200908190948 Brow Myth: #1
I think this is the most common question I get from clients asking if it’s ok to wax or tweeze above the eyebrow shape. I always say it depends on who’s doing it.

For the client: Yes, it’s ok to remove hair above the brow, IF the hair has nothing to do with the brow. I alway say if the hair is not touching the brow in anyway, there’s really no way you can ruin your brow shape.  So if the hair is on the temple, forehead or above the brow, it’s ok to wax because not only will it give you a cleaner appearance, but it makes the line of the brow sharper and stronger.

Leave it to the expert
:  Now if your brows are uneven, one higher than the other, or two different shapes, then leave it to the professional to even and balance your eyebrows. And I would say this is the most common ‘fix’ that I do on brows. Aligning so that both are on the same level, and adjusting the brow to make the line of the brow sharper. I can make the brow shape straighter, softer, or thinner based on what the brow shape is giving me. But leave this to the expert, and then clean up the line as they come in. But if there’s any major work that needs to be done? It’s best to leave it to the brow expert.

Product Spotlight: The Spoolie Brush

The Spoolie Brush
Yep, it’s the faithful spoolie brush. And I use mine allll the time. Why? It gives the finishing touch to your brows. Much like a makeup sponge or brush can soften the edges of your eye shadow, blush and foundation, the spoolie brush softens your brows so that it looks like your eyebrow makeup is really your brows and not makeup.  I use it on every client, every time for a softer looking brow that looks great.

How to Use:
The spoolie brush should be used right after you apply each step of eyebrow pencil and eyebrow shadow. Apply as usual, and then brush through the brows to soften and blend the color to the shade you want. It evens out the color so that it’s uniform across the whole brow.  So if you apply your shadow, brush through. Applied more? Brush through again.

Tips:
What’s cool about this spoolie brush is that you can bend the head of the brush to have a angle to it. So for those who like to work with the handle away from the eye, you can bend the top and brush through to see what you’re doing. Best part, is that the brush head is completely bendable at any which way, and can easily be bent back to straight without ruining the brush at all.

Multi-Task:
The spoolie brush is also great for brushing through lashes after applying mascara, and the bristles are super soft, so it feels great.

Salon owners and stylists from around the US gathered to learn how to break in to the freelance world of hairstyling. In addition to learning the in’s and out’s of the studio world, each artist selected a model (from a casting of more than 50 top NY models) and then prepared her for the set. The hair was complemented by a beautiful David Maderich make up design and an Elke Von Freudenberg brow finish.
