I’ve been to Eliza and Robin Evans. Both are very good, but I find that Elke’s “eye” is more suitable to my own as far as shape and expression. I like a more natural brow with a pleasant expression. I can’t stand the harsh overly extended or arched brows that seem to be out there a lot. I just want to look like me - only better. Elke spent about an hour with me - listening, talking and getting to know my likes and dislikes. She totally understood!! She looked me face-on to see my bone structure and how my brows naturally grew. She explained every part to me and let me even watch while she was doing them so that I could say, “NOOOOOO!!” if I needed to. I didn’t need to. She shaped them and they look beautiful. They are the best I’ve ever had! I still need to grow one in more due to previous overwaxing. But Elke gave me tips on how to get them to grow faster and fuller. I’m SO glad I’ve found her. She is wonderful and I feel really lucky to have her in my neighborhood. WONDERFUL!!!

When In Brooklyn…
Well here they are….my beautiful new eyebrows. Elke is a genius…she was so sweet and welcoming! I was staying on the upper east side and I made my way downtown and eventually to Brooklyn where Ms. Elke works in a salon. Her eyebrow bar is very much sought after and I am sure you can see why.

I don’t have a lot of eyebrows to begin with (super thin Dietrich style over tweezed brows back in the 90’s…don’t ask!) they are fairly sparse as well. Elke managed to clean them up and fill them in just enough so that they were perfect! In addition to my great brows, I got some fantastic bath goodies.

A makeup artist and eyebrow-shaping expert at Slope Suds Salon in Park Slope, Elke Von Freudenberg, said her favorite brow product is an angled brush — “the tiniest, smallest angle brush you can find.” Two of the best, she said, are Benefit’s Hard Angle Brush ($14) and Sephora’s Professionnel Platinum Angle Brush #22 ($18). She prefers powders to pencils, but adds that if your eyebrows are balanced in color and shape, neither is needed.

Do something with your eyebrows.
I thought I was obsessed with shaping eyebrows, but Elke Von Freudenberg who writes the Beauty Newsletter really comes first when brows are considered. In her article The Model Eyebrow she writes word after word of quality eyebrow shaping advice, from which tweezers to use, which shape is right, where should you pluck and where not. But, the thing which most impressed me was the part about eyebrow makeup:

1. If you are growing in your eyebrows, or just want a different look, eyebrow shadows are the way to go. Leave the eyebrow pencils at home. Why? The wax in pencils can make eyebrows look too dark, heavy and easily smears in warm weather. Instead, apply eyebrow shadow with a small angle brush, that’s very soft and very thin. You’ll get the best line that way.
2. Best eyebrow colors? Choose a eyebrow shadow that’s 2-3 shades lighter than your hair color. Why? It always looks darker once it’s applied.
3. Once applied, take a small toothbrush and brush in the shadow into the skin. It will last hours longer and appear much more natural. This step is usually forgotten and often makes eyebrows appear heavy and fake.
4. Want a quick evening look? Take your eyebrow color but in a shimmery shade and apply just as you would during the day. The soft shimmer from the shadow will make eyes sparkle.

#5 If your cream eye shadow dries out,put a few drops of water or olive/mineral oil in it.

#19 Use a blush as a lipstick - just apply your blush on your lips with an eyeshadow sponge applicator, and then use your favorite clear lip gloss or lip balm over it.

#21 Makeup kits can range in the hundreds of dollars, so instead, simplify. Looking to store your lipsticks? Try the drugstore to find pillboxes, just fill with your favorite lipsticks by cracking in your lip colors with a Popsicle stick.

Your Face

#36 For a new bronzer, use a foundation that is two to three shades darker than your skin tone and apply where you would use your bronzer. If you’re in a pinch, dig out that warm brown eye shadow.

#37 Don’t spend money on expensive eye makeup remover. Find a pretty glass bottle and fill it with baby shampoo. There’s a reason they say “no tears.”
